Soul/Energy/Feeling
About
Meet Brenda
Taking inspiration from the earth, land and sea that surrounds me, I create contemporary mosaic art. Beneath the landscape is a world of shape, form, movement and flow, often unseen to the naked eye. Like the landscape, each mosaic starts as an unseen piece, allowing the materials to move, flow and guide intuitively to take shape and create form.
It is always intriguing to see a finished piece and to hear the viewer’s response to it. The artwork often provokes an emotion, a connection, a feeling, an energy or an unknown knowing. It is always different for each individual.
Living amongst the dry-stone walls and karst landscape of the Burren, in the west of Ireland, inspires my current work. I love to walk the earth, noticing what’s beneath my feet. The natural materials I use include slate, stone, shale, glass and other objects. Each piece of stone and glass is cleaned, cut and shaped, piece by piece, to bring texture, colour and flow to the mosaic.
"Feeling the Earth Underneath Our Feet"
"I am primarily self-taught and take guidance from other renowned mosaic artists."
Having worked in the Funds Industry for over 30 years, my creativity was only satisfied in pockets of time. Since leaving corporate life, time has become my greatest gift. It has allowed me to step back into my artistic side and become so much more fulfilled. In my mid-sixties, I feel I am finally where I need to be, coming into my own and doing what I really love to do!
Brenda is a contemporary mosaic artist, working with stone, slate and glass.
She has moved her home to Ballyvaughan, Co. Clare which has influenced her work, and inspired a reverence for natural stone, for the Burren, for the earth. “What I love about the earth is that it supports us, we walk on it, we use it, we misuse it, and yet, it remains beneath our feet, always nurturing us.”
The earth comes into all of my pieces; it inspires my work. Every piece I use comes from the earth: stone, slate, glass, wood.
