I sometimes feel the ancestors as I place the stone down. This one felt tribal to me, as my hands did the work. It was intuitive and full of flow. It called for an uneven surface and different coloured adhesive to make it earthy.
This mosaic is made on a hand-made substrate which has been shaped in an uneven surface to replicate the natural ups and downs of the earth. The stone and slate were collected in Ireland cut by hand. Tesserae include stone made with recycled mortar and tile. Each piece has been placed on a tinted mortar adhesive. For more information, check out my chat on this piece in The Process
